Quick Answer: New Nevada residents have 30 days to get a Nevada driver’s license and register their vehicles. Do it in this order: buy Nevada auto insurance, get the free VIN inspection, pass the Washoe County emissions test, then visit the DMV once. Nevada has no state income tax, so the tax paperwork is mostly about closing out your old state and updating your address everywhere else.
A moving to Nevada checklist is short, but the clock on it is fast. The state gives new residents 30 days to swap the license and the plates, and most people spend the first two weeks unpacking. Then the deadline arrives with a DMV line attached. This guide walks through the sequence that gets it done in one trip, explains the Washoe County smog rule, covers what changes when you leave a state with income tax for one without, and lists the address updates that trip people up. It is written for the Reno-Sparks side of the state, where our crews work every day.
The 30-Day Clock
Nevada law expects a new resident to hold a Nevada driver’s license within 30 days of establishing residency. Vehicle registration runs on the same window. The clock starts when you take a job, sign a lease, or otherwise make Nevada home, not when the truck arrives. So if you moved in on the first of the month, plan the DMV visit for the third week. The Reno DMV takes appointments, and booking one the day you arrive is the single best move on this list. If you came in from the west, our post on moving from California to Reno covers the crossing itself. This post picks up where that one ends.
The Order That Saves a Second Trip
- Nevada auto insurance first. The DMV will not register a vehicle on an out-of-state policy. You need a policy from a Nevada-licensed carrier, in the exact names on the title, effective on or before the registration date. Set this up before anything else.
- VIN inspection. Any vehicle never titled in Nevada needs one. It is free, it verifies the vehicle’s identity, and Reno has a drive-through inspection station. It is not a safety inspection.
- Emissions test. If the vehicle will be based in the urban part of Washoe County, it needs a Nevada smog test before registration. Out-of-state tests do not count. The certificate is valid for 90 days, so do it inside the window but not months early.
- The DMV visit. Bring the out-of-state license, proof of identity, proof of your Nevada address, the insurance card, the title or lien information, the VIN inspection, and the emissions certificate. Then the license and the registration happen in one appointment.
The Washoe County Smog Rule
Nevada requires annual emissions testing only in the urban parts of Clark and Washoe counties. So a car based in Reno, Sparks, or the surrounding valleys needs a test at registration and at every renewal. A car based out in Fernley or another rural address usually does not. The rule covers gasoline vehicles from 1968 onward and lighter diesels. New vehicles are exempt for their first three registrations, and hybrids are exempt longer. Electric vehicles skip the test entirely. Testing stations are private shops all over the metro, and most can also process the registration renewal on the spot.
The No-Income-Tax Paperwork
Nevada has no state income tax, which is why a lot of people move here. However, that does not mean the tax work disappears. It shifts.
- Close out the old state. If you came from a state with income tax, you will file a part-year return there for the months before you moved. Keep the lease, the closing documents, and the DMV receipts, because those dates prove when residency changed.
- Update your employer. Payroll needs your new address so state withholding stops. Remote workers with an out-of-state employer should ask how the company handles Nevada residents.
- Know what Nevada does charge. Property tax runs at the county level, and vehicle registration includes an annual tax based on the vehicle’s value. Neither is dramatic, but neither is zero.
Voter Registration and Everything Else
The DMV visit can also register you to vote, so say yes when they ask. After that, the address changes pile up: the post office forwarding order, banks and cards, health insurance, the pharmacy, the vet, and any subscriptions tied to a ZIP code. Pets need a Washoe County license. If you own a boat or a trailer, those register separately. Schools want proof of residency for enrollment, and the same lease that satisfied the DMV works there too.
If You Moved Within Nevada
Coming from Las Vegas or another Nevada city? The license and the plates stay, but the address on both needs updating, and a car moving from Clark County to Washoe County still needs a fresh Washoe emissions test at the next renewal. Everything else on this list, from voter registration to the post office, applies the same way.
